Scripture, Tradition, Reason

The Anglican Church of Canada

          Diocese of Huron

We are pleased that you have chosen to visit us on the internet and we offer the following information to help you become better acquainted with our parish.

We are a vibrant, traditional, faith community of all ages that gathers together each week to worship God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in the rich spiritual tapestry of the Anglican tradition. Empowered by the love of God we endeavour to be a community that fosters a sense of hope, meaning and joy in the lives of modern people.

In listening to God’s Word and partaking in the Sacraments of the faith we hope to be drawn into an ever deepening relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Our parish draws people from all walks of life, from each corner of the city and beyond. We invite you, with your family and friends, to come worship with us and join our community of faith.

While our liturgical celebrations constitute a primary focus for our community, we have a number of social and outreach groups which contribute to the life of our parish. In short, there is something for everyone.

Adult Choir - The choir leads the congregation in music at the 10:30 am service each week (except during summer months). The choir rehearses every Thursday evening at 7:00 pm. New members are always welcome.

Altar Servers - These volunteers, comprised of both youth and adults, assist the priests during our liturgical celebrations as well as at funerals and other Holy Day services.

Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen -This men’s group meets at the call of the president and provides assistance to the parish whenever needed.

Chancel Guild - This dedicated group prepares and maintains the altar linens, hangings and vessels. They decorate our beautiful worship space during special times of year such as Harvest, Easter and Christmas, and arrange the flowers that are placed at the altar each week in memory of loved ones.

Jubilee Club - A seniors’ club which meets for lunch, fun, fellowship and games every Wednesday following the mid-week Eucharist.

Lay Eucharistic Administrants - Several members of our parish are trained to assist the priests in administering the Eucharist during services. As well they assist the clergy in taking the Sacrament to members who are shut-in or in nursing homes.

Nursery & Sunday School - During the service, children of school age are divided up into age appropriate classes to learn about our faith in a fun and supportive setting. Infants not old enough for classes are cared for in the nursery. All volunteers dealing with children must agree to be screened.

Sidespersons & Greeters - This group welcomes people as they arrive at the church, providing them with a bulletin as well as answering any questions newcomers may have. They also receive and present the offering of the congregation.

St. Katherine’s Anglican Church Women - This is an active women’s organization in the parish which meets monthly for fellowship, study, and planning for ministry and mission.

Youth Group - Teens will find this group made up of like-minded friends who share Bible study, fun and fellowship through a variety of activities, both spiritual and secular.

Reaching Out With God’s Love

The Church of the Ascension reaches out in Christ’s love beyond itself into the community through many outreach initiatives. Just a few of these include the Well-Come Centre for Homeless Women, Children’s Aid Society, the Downtown Mission and the uMngeni AIDS centre.

Christian Study and Education

Studies of Scripture, books and even movies are offered in Advent, Lent and other times of year. Watch for announcements in the bulletin. Everyone is welcome.
